The Importance of Insulating

If your house gets a little chilly in the winter, don’t turn up the thermostat! It might be time to add more insulation. Here are some quick tips from the Department of Energy on checking your insulation levels:

  • Check the attic, walls and floors adjacent to an unheated space, like a garage or basement and to measure the depth or thickness of existing insulation
  • Inspect the exterior walls using an electrical outlet (turn the power off first!). When you remove the outlet cover, you should be able to see around the outlet box and check on the insulation thickness

Check the Department of Energy’s online Insulation Fact Sheet for how to determine the R-values of insulation previously installed and see if adding more will help you stay warm – and save money!
